Calm Before the Storm --> 30 April: 21 photos

With no cruise ships in today and Easter over, Symi was that little bit quieter today. Despite the early rain the sun shone once again, as shop owners make last minute adjustments in preparation for the new busy month ahead.

Second Cruise Ship Arrives --> 29 April: 32 photos

The blue skies returned, and Symi was once again illuminated in the glorious sunshine. The 'Clipper Adventurer' became the second cruise ship to arrive in as many days, carrying more Island first timers. Today also marked the first surgery day for the visiting FAROS vets, hopefully beginning a new era for the care and welfare of animals on Symi.

St George's Day --> 28 April: 19 photos

It's St George's Day today (celebrated on Easter Monday as the 23rd of April was during Lent this year), one of the biggest namedays in Greece. Symi was at her busiest with two day-boats and a cruise ship arriving with hundreds of tourists.

Easter in Symi --> 27 April: 41 photos & 9 videos

Despite the morning rain, Greek Easter was celebrated with the traditional roasting of lamb, loud music, dancing and lots of wine. This evening the burning of Judas will take place at the central square in Yialos followed by live Greek island music and dancing from Nasia Konitopoulou and her band.

Easter Saturday --> 26 April: 31 photos & 6 videos

Everyone on Symi is getting ready for tonight's midnight Easter celebration. People will gather outside their local church carrying white candles with the "Holy Light" and waiting for the moment of the Resurrection exactly at midnight before heading back home for the tradional midnight feast.

Good Friday --> 25 April: 38 photos 10 Videos

The bells have been clanging sadly all day in remembrance of the Crucifixion. Tonight, everyone on Symi lit a candle and followed the procession of the Epitaphios from their local church. Down at the harbour, the procession was beautiful complete with noisy fireworks, bangers and dynamite!

Easter Begins --> 24 April: 23 photos

The long Easter holiday weekend started this evening. Symi has been bustling: two day-trip boats, dozens of yachts, three "regular" boats from Rhodes and thousands of residents and visitors enjoying possibly the hottest day in the year so far!

Twenty Yachts --> 23 April: 21 photos

There were more than twenty yachts at the harbour today and two tourist boats bringing hundreds of day-tourists. A large number of the Symi diaspora is already here for the Easter festivities with many more expected tomorrow ahead of the four-day holiday.

The Sound of Easter --> 20 April: 19 photos

Today is the "official" start of the Easter festivities. Most major churches are lit up and every evening during the Big/Great Week (Μεγάλη Βδομάδα) there is a special service which is broadcast by the loudspeakers. It's the sound of Easter which today accompanies a gorgeous full moon.

Improvements --> 19 April: 21 photos

After a windy and cooler day yesterday, very warm weather returned to Symi today. At Harani, the improvements of the marina are well under-way and the sea-front hotels are expected to open in the next few days.

Key Delay --> 18 April: 19 photos

The day started grey and windy but by the time the Proteas arrived in early afternoon, the sun had come out but the wind is still blowing. The Proteas got delayed on Symi for more than an hour as a car had to be towed away when its owner realised the keys were left on Rhodes!

Packed Harbour --> 16 April: 19 photos

The front harbour was packed full of yachts today with people onboard enjoying the warm sunshine and view. Two navy boats had to park side-by-side as, despite being early season, there are very few harbour spaces left by the Roloi.

The heatwave continues and today it felt like August! 34 degrees with virtually no wind and a dry heat that is very unusual for this time of the year. The sea is still a bit cold to swim, but if this weather continues, we may celebrate Easter on the beach!

Summer is Here --> 12 April: 26 photos

It may be early April, but summer is here already! The temperature today climbed to 27 degrees and if it weren't for the haze it would have reached a comfortable 30! The harbour is getting very busy with day and weekend visitors and the Dodekanisos Pride is already fully booked for going to Rhodes tomorrow evening!

Despite the forecast for a warm day, dark clouds, rain and gale force winds battered Symi today. The Proteas and Pride boats managed to come and go, but the Aegli didn't make it back home this evening.

Most restaurants are now open in Yialos, catering for the Rhodes day-trippers arriving with the Dodekanisos Pride every morning as well as the many yachts that come to Symi on a daily basis.

Early Session Boost --> 7 April: 19 photos

A busier day on Symi with the regular ferry service resuming after yesterday's storm, bringing a small group of day-tourists from Rhodes. One by one, shops and restaurants start to open and getting ready for the early session boost around Greek Easter at the end the month.

Stormy Start, Bright End --> 6 April: 19 photos

The morning started with strong winds and heavy rain, but by early afternoon the clouds have gone and Symi returned to her usual brightness. As the weather now improves, this may have been the last major storm until next autumn.
